The 3-Book Deal

On Feb 1, 2008 my wonderful agent, Caitlin Blasdell of Liza Dawson Associates, informed me that the details are all finalized and I can shout it to the world.

Tor books (an imprint of St. Martins) has given me a very nice deal (as categorized on Publisher’s Marketplace) for a 3-book, traditional epic fantasy series. Each book is to be from 120-140k words. David Hartwell will be my editor (so stoked about that!). The three were sold based on my completed novel, SERVANT OF A DARK GOD, and the synopsis of the following two, CURSE OF A DARK GOD, and DARK GOD’S GLORY. The first should be out in the summer of 2009.

    A couple of quick updates.

I just finished the edit of CURSE. I now have 697 pages all marked in red. Most of the revisions are small things. But there are some larger scene level edits. I hope to finish these in the next few weeks. Then we do the copy edit, print the proof, do the proof edit, and then at long last this baby will be available for readers. We’re so very close.

In other news, Larry Correia did a book bomb for BAD PENNY yesterday. At 6:30 a.m. this morning it was ranked number 457 at Amazon. It was the #3 book in the Thriller>Military category and #50 in the Thriller>Suspense. Hundreds of folks purchased the book. A couple even finished and began posting glowing reviews on Amazon and Larry’s site. I can’t tell you how excited I am to get the story into the hands of new readers. Both series are now launched.

    Both books are available at:

    • Amazon (trade paperback and ebook)
    • Barnes&Noble (ebook)
    • Kobo (ebook)
    • Diesel (ebook)

I’m still working with the blasted Smashwords to get it up at iTunes and the Sony eReader store. I’ve been working since the middle of December on that. I’m going to give them one more shot, and then we’ll have to figure something else out. Those of you wanting to get it on iTunes, I hope to have it resolved by this time next week. Thank you so much for your extreme patience.

John guests on Writing Excuses season 3 episode 19

    writing-excuses-the-guys2-300x139

Here’s the third episode I recorded with the Writing Excuses guys.

In the first podcast we talked about putting and not putting ourselves in our writing and making characters who don’t all sound like the author. In the second, we talked about how to not repeat yourself as an author. In this one, I shared some basics about generating emotion in readers and dealing with negative emotions writers face when they encounter rejection, compare their career with others, hit writer’s block, or hear someone didn’t like their story.

As usual, the guys had some great insights. Check it out: Emotion in Fiction.

  • Awful Intent update: Chapter 20

Just finished chapter 20. It’s been a rough month for writing, but I believe life has settled down a bit, and I should be able to get the time in that I need. I hate giving targets publicly because the last time I did that I just missed and missed and missed. So we’ll stay with the progress gauge. Although I have to say that I might go over thirty chapters. I normally write chapters about 2,500 words long. But these are averaging 2,000. We’ll see. The outline always changes during the first draft.
