John guests on Writing Excuses season 3 episode 19

writing-excuses-the-guys2-300x139

Here’s the third episode I recorded with the Writing Excuses guys.

In the first podcast we talked about putting and not putting ourselves in our writing and making characters who don’t all sound like the author. In the second, we talked about how to not repeat yourself as an author. In this one, I shared some basics about generating emotion in readers and dealing with negative emotions writers face when they encounter rejection, compare their career with others, hit writer’s block, or hear someone didn’t like their story.

As usual, the guys had some great insights. Check it out: Emotion in Fiction.

Devon Dorrity, who helped me put together my covers, just helped me put together some business cards. I’m pretty excited about them. I’m biased, but I think they look awesome.

I’m not sure about the one for Bad Penny. Devon liked it. Any opinions?

  • Have the Proof of Servant

I received the proof of SERVANT from CreateSpace today. Folks, it is georgeous. Inside and out. The cover, title page, Isaac Stewart’s map, headers, front and back matter, chapter titles, the poems. I’m so pleased.

Most readers will look at it and say, hey, looks like another book. But that’s the point. The interior is designed to give a great reading experience and fade into the background, letting the story come to the fore. The cover is meant to grab and give the feel. I think both do their job splendidly.

Of course, you know what this means, don’t you?

It means that next week we will have a new release day with the new release discount pricing. You may wonder why I don’t just do it now. The answer is that there are some copy edits that need to be made. Things you never catch until you see the story in book form. That’s why you always get a proof. As soon as we’ve made those updates, I’ll announce the sale.

  • Writing a tie-in

I read this article today, laughed, and then thought a while. Don’t know if tie-ins will ever be in my future. I would hope to do it just once for a series or film I love. In the meantime, it’s great fun reading about someone else’s experience.

  1. I loved this episode of Writing Excuses. I pulled up Word while I was listening and took some notes, and I think I came away with some great stuff on emotions. It reminded me LTUE where you talked about zing. Getting those great ideas, those ones that really give us a jolt, and then using them to create an emotion in a reader, that’s the stuff good books are made of. I decided that even the most mundane plot could be seen as a good book if you just find the words that create the thoughts in the readers head that generate the emotions that you’re looking for. Way to use cognitive therapy as a writing tool! Also, I got my hands on a copy of the book you recommended, and it’s been…well…helpful…self-helpful. And that doesn’t really begin to cover just how good it’s been. Thanks!
