Servant of a Dark God Beads

TheGroveBead_ValerieMooreYes, you read that right. Valerie Moore, an Arizonan bead maker, read the book and loved it. After coming to the Poisoned Pen signing, she was inspired with a new bead design that she calls “The Grove,” after the Grove of Hismayas.

She says, “I like when other people’s work speaks to me and I can release it in my form of art (which happens often enough through books or music). . . The Grove is a design, inspired by your work, made from polymer clay and 22k gold. The colors and design evoke a sense of depth, much like The Grove in Servant of A Dark God. It runs deep and true; like a network of roots. Earthy, deep and calm is what they “feel” like to me. The gold glints out like the sparkling of a soul, pure and shining and as yet untarnished. And in a way, think of the dragonfly “zinging” around. 😉 It must have gotten some funny cookies to eat.”

I say “hear, hear!” to funny cookies! I’m so stoked my story inspired her. I think the beads look great. More importantly, so do my girls, who are true bead heads (we dropped $50 on Black Friday at a bead shop, ack!). Check it out. If you want some for yourself, you can get them online.

  • Awful Intent Update 11/7

Today was awesome for writing. First, I got five hours in, and I was in flow the whole time. When you’re in flow, you’re in the scene, seeing it, smelling it, experiencing it. It’s awesome.

Second, during my review of the first draft, I came to the final battle scene and realized I’d made it much too convoluted. Way too convoluted. When I wrote it, I thought it was great, but coming to it fresh, it was just too much. So I drew a big red line through all those pages and made a note to rewrite it. Today I got to rewrite that section plus a bunch before and after it.

I have to say I love sheriff Hood, the female character who is teamed up with Frank. The woman is spectacular. And I love this fight scene. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or read a thriller fight scene like this one. Sorry, won’t tell you what it is (no spoilers), but I can tell you I can’t wait to get this out to readers. I’m as pleased with this as I was the snow mobile sequence in Bad Penny.

    Have a great weekend.

  • Apologies to commenters

Back at the beginning of February my site was targeted for a spam attack. So I turned on Askimet which helps deal with that. Being new to Askimet and some of the wordpress setting changes I made, I didn’t know that a number of comments were being put into a pending queue. So a number of you posted comments and never saw them appear or received a reply. For example, a couple of people took issue with my review of Basic Economics because I said Obama has made a statement in good Marxist fashion. I didn’t refuse to post your comments because you disagreed. I just didn’t see them. Another person asked about LTUE, etc. I’ve approved the comments and replied. Hopefully, you’ll get a more timely response in the future. 🙂

  • Bad Penny Update – 2 Chapters to Go

I just typed the last words of the climax!  The last 15,000 words have been a blast to write.  Heck, the whole thing has been fun.

If you look at the progress meter, you’ll see I’m at 83,384 words.  It’s weird writing something this “short.” I figure I’ll end up around 90,000 words.  I did some analysis of the size of some other thrillers.  You can see it below. It’s not super rigorous, but BAD PENNY falls well within the range.

    AUTHOR AVERAGE WORDS BOOKS
    Dean Koontz 93,500 2
    Harlen Coben 130,500 2
    JA Konrath 77,667 3
    James Lee Burke 153,000 1
    John Grisham 148,000 1
    Ken Follett 140,000 1
    Lee Child 149,000 4
    Michael Connelly 145,000 1
    Ridley Pearson 114,000 1
    Robert Crais 80,667 3

The average of all those books is 117,000.

So I have about two more chapters to go.  I’d finish them next week, but we’re taking some vacation for the 4th.  This means I expect to type “The End” in the second week of July. Then I’ll set it aside for a few weeks, revise it, and send it out to first readers, including my agent.  Here are the characters:

    • Frank Shaw – Ex-con trying to go straight
    • Sam Cartwright – Friendly neighborhood Mormon who’s trying to make Frank feel welcome
    • Dan Meese – A man with snakes in his soul, Frank’s former cellmate
    • Tony Shaw – Frank’s nephew and hacker
    • Carmen Escobar – The woman found tied up in the trunk of Dan’s car
    • Pinto Correia – Bearded gun nut and Sam’s go-to guy
    • Jesus Goroza – Zombie for a drug cartel & Dan’s employer

I really think folks are going to enjoy this one.

  • Awful Intent Update: First Draft of Working Outline

On Saturday, with the arrival of a little gang of delicious insights, I finished the first working outline of Awful Intent. I can’t wait to dig into the writing. There will be one more draft of the working outline, and then I begin to write. I expect to be into the prologue by Wednesday.
