Behold, the Opening Chapters of CURSE OF A DARK GOD

For your reading pleasure, I have posted the current version of the first 12 chapters of Curse of a Dark God below. (And there was much rejoicing, yea.)

Read and enjoy!

CURSE OF A DARK GOD draft 3 chapters 1-12 reader

Note: these are draft chapters and may change in the final version.

If you would like to be part of a test audience, please open the document and begin reading just as you would any book that you picked up because it looked interesting. Stop where you normally would. Then email me by clicking on the Contact John link under my photo up on the left. I’ll send you a couple of questions. Please make sure you don’t ask for the questions before you’ve given the bit above a go (I don’t want the questions to affect your reading). Also, don’t put any critique hat on. Just read as you normally would. 🙂 The deadline for test audience responses is January 15th.

  • Release Dates for the Novels

BTW, I talked to Stacy Hague-Hill today and got the release and due dates.

    Book 1
    Revisions due May 15th, 2008
    Final due July 1, 2008
    Hardcover release Sept 2009
    Paperback release Aug 2010

She said because it’s my first novel and because it’s a trilogy they want to make sure they properly lay the groundwork, getting cover quotes, working up excitement, etc. And that’s why there’s such a space between the contract, final delivery date, and HC release. Although the schedule repeats for every book. On the one hand, I wish they were coming out on a 9 month schedule. On the other hand, I think my focus should be making these three books the very best they can be. And this gives me the time. Besides, there will be a HC release and then a paperback and so each book will get two pulses each year. Although the paperback is released usually right before the second book comes out.

    Book 2
    Draft due Feb 2009
    Final due July 1, 2009
    Hardcover release Sept 2010
    Paperback release Aug 2011

    Book 3
    Draft due Feb 2010
    Final due July 1, 2010
    Hardcover release Sep 2011
Paperback release Aug 2012? Not sure.

That’s a ways out there. Holy cow.

    2011?

I haven’t planned anything out that far into the future since college and that wasn’t really planning but a lifestyle (grin).

  • Your Chance to Win a Signed Copy of Gun Runner

Gun Runner, the action-packed sci-fi novel I wrote with Larry Correia, comes out in February. But we already have copies.

And I’m happy to announce that this week you have a chance to WIN A STACK OF FIVE SIGNED SCI-FI AND FANTASY NOVELS that includes Gun Runner.

Even if you don’t win, you can still get copies at Uncle Hugo’s that were signed by both Larry and I! You can pre-order one now, and get it shipped to you as soon as they’re available in February.

Uncle Hugo’s is one of those rare indie bookshops that specializes and knows their customers. They’re the oldest independent science fiction bookstore in America.

  • Green light for CURSE

I just got word from my editor, and we’ve finally been able to agree on the outline!

    Let us rejoice.

It took far longer than I’d planned. But I’m happy to move forward. I’ll finish up a couple of things I’m working on right now with the thriller and then begin production next week. I’m estimating I’m going to have to write about 130k worth of new material, which is basically enough to fill a normal novel. If I’m diligent, I can average about 7,500 words a week. That’s not super fast, but I do have a day job. So my initial target for delivering it is September 1st.

It then goes into the publisher machine. I’ll know in the fall what the release date will be.

This will also give me some extra time to develop the premise of the thriller. I hoped to have a rough outline by this point, at the very least the story problem. But it’s not quite there yet. So this will give me a little more cooking time. I’m still hoping to finish BOTH before the end of the year. At least two novels a year. That’s the goal.

    Maya Lassiter interviews The Man

Maya has one of the most quirky goat-loving blogs around. I dare you to read just one of her blogs. You can’t do it.  You’ll find yourself going back to read another. And another. Anyway, she’s been doing a series called “How Writers Do What They Do” where she interviews authors on the creative process. Mine’s the latest, but there are a lot of other interviews in the series you will want to read. Enjoy!

  • Holy Mackrel, My First Cover Illustration

And, Dude! Will ya look at this thing.

    igms-cover-issue8-smaller.jpg

Read FROM THE CLAY OF HIS HEART at Orson Scott Card’s Intergalatic Medicine Show.

Read the story behind the story on Side-Show Freaks in the coming month.

Then read more about Scott Altmann, the marvelous illustrator.

Born on Long Island, New York, Scott was never far from a drawing tool and a surface to make a mark. The early years consisted of funny-looking beasts and asymmetrical faces. Years later Scott attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and graduated from the Illustration Department with his BFA.

He enjoys sushi, cerebral spelunking, playing guitar and painting in oils. He draws to escape, and tries to escape to draw. All other times he can be found with his wife and son, in Long Island, New York — laughing uncontrollably and causing mischief.

  • Awful Intent Update: First Draft of Working Outline

On Saturday, with the arrival of a little gang of delicious insights, I finished the first working outline of Awful Intent. I can’t wait to dig into the writing. There will be one more draft of the working outline, and then I begin to write. I expect to be into the prologue by Wednesday.

  1. Awesome! I went ahead and linked this on readandfindout.com. It’s always refreshing to see authors put their stuff out there.

  2. John, finished SoaDG last night. Writing my review today. Also read these 12 chapters. But when I try clicking the link to email you it won’t give me the link. Help?

  3. Harm,

Thanks for the heads up. I upgraded to the newest WordPress version and forgot to reactivate. It should be working now. Look forward to your review. I’m going to email you the test audience questions.

  4. John, I am perusing the Life the Universe and Everything site. You’re not on the list of authors attending. What gives?

  5. Hezekiah,

I think they just haven’t updated. As far as I know I’m slated to be on panels etc. I received an initial email from the organizers, but haven’t heard anything yet as to official schedule etc. You might want to contact them directly to see if they have info I haven’t received yet. I believe the email is on the site.

  6. Okay. Because, you know. If you weren’t there, why bother going? I need to get SoaDG signed, after all.

  7. Indeed, cause those other folks coming, like Sanderson, Modesitt, Farland–chumps 😀
