Smith’s grocery update

Okay, so SERVANT is still in Smith’s. Get them before they’re gone. If you were thinking of purchasing, now’s the time (and let’s hope the trial run is a success and they take it national in their stores). They have it cheaper than anywhere else in the Utah area. I think it’s $17 or $19. That’s a great price for a new hardback.  I know it’s in these stores.

  • Heber, UT
  • Jackson Hole, WY
  • Park City, UT
  • Provo, UT (by the library)
  • Orem, UT (State and Center)
  • Sandy, UT (benches, Bengal Blvd.)
  • West Jordan, UT
  • I’m sure there are other Smith stores that I’ve missed. You can check your local store to see. Let me know here if you spot it. 🙂

  • Need Your Input on a T-shirt Design

Folks have been asking and I’ve been thinking about a T-shirt. I want it to have potential to be a cool saying on its own (so people actually want it) as well as promo for the book. I know I want the title, but do we need anything else? I’d like your input.

    OPTION 1: TITLE ONLY

Slap the title as it appears on the book on a black shirt. Font is brown or the green of what’s on the book’s cover.

    ServantofaDarkGodFont

    OPTION 2: I AM NOT

I had someone say that the parents might be concerned if their kids were walking around with a shirt proclaiming they were servants of a dark god. Part of me says, yeah! Another part says, well, I guess I can see their point. The suggested solution was to add the words “I am not a” in front of the title in smaller font. It works. But it also feels like a copy cat of Dan Wells’ marvelous shirt which is just the title of his book.

    OPTION 3: TITLE, SUBTITLE

In this version you get the bang of the title, but then you make it clear we’re talking about a book, not minions. So you have the title as above in big letters, then underneath or on top in smaller font you have:

    • Read it!
    • Eat. Sleep. Read.
    • Rocks!
    • An Epic Fantasy
    • Book-o-thrills
    • The humans are being ranched…
    • It’s story time, kiddies…
    • ??

So here’s where I need your help. Let me know which option you like best and if you have any ideas for option 3, please share them!!!

    Update and Fage

I passed the 90% mark today on SERVANT. It’s been wonderful going back through this story, remembering why I loved these characters so much. The cover too is coming along. I’m looking forward to revealing it in the near future. Right now everything looks like it will release on target, although that may change.

While you’re here, you know I have been on a quest for delicious low-sugar yogurt for some time. I have found it at last. Behold.

    Fage 2 percent yogurt

No Greek yogurt has a better taste or texture. And there’s no added sugar. Add some fruit and it’s heaven.

It’s pronounced “fa-yeh.” Except, how do you pronounce that? Who comes up with product names nobody can pronounce?

But it doesn’t matter how you pronounce it. We luvs it, Precious.

  • Awful Intent update: Chapter 20

Just finished chapter 20. It’s been a rough month for writing, but I believe life has settled down a bit, and I should be able to get the time in that I need. I hate giving targets publicly because the last time I did that I just missed and missed and missed. So we’ll stay with the progress gauge. Although I have to say that I might go over thirty chapters. I normally write chapters about 2,500 words long. But these are averaging 2,000. We’ll see. The outline always changes during the first draft.

  • Life, The Universe, & Everything 2010 Schedule

If you’re a writer, you’ll find Life, The Universe, & Everything (LTUE) an excellent convention. Yes, it’s focused on science fiction and fantasy, but the principles of writing discussed apply generally and there are a lot of authors who will be there that write in different genres–YA, romance, etc. In fact, there will be a LOT of published authors there, period–including two that have recently been on the NY Times best seller list and others who have just broken in.

If I were an aspiring author, I’d be making sure I had arrangements to attend at least part of the convention. Follow the link above and look at the list of panel topics. And remember: it’s open to all and FREE of charge.

    Dates: Feb 11-13, 2010
    Wilkinson Center
    Brigham Young University
    Provo, UT 84602

I’ll be doing the following. Hope to see you there!

BTW, Stephen Nelson has graciously offered to film the workshop. If the recording and class pass muster, we’ll post it for your viewing enjoyment!

  1. John,

Got a really odd question that I hope doesn’t make me sound too weird.

I’ve been planning to buy your book but live in Rhode Island. We do not have a Smith’s here. Is it better for you if I just buy it at my local Borders or could we assist you more if I could find someone in UT who could buy it for me at a Smith’s? The idea, of course, is to potentially get them to carry you in greater numbers/stores.

I’m not sure which market helps you out greater; the Southeastern New England area or giving a little nudge to Smith’s. If you have a preference, please let me know! 😀

  2. Andrewv,

You’re a peach. The Smith’s is an intermountain grocery chain owned by Kroger Food. So while a purchase from one of the UT Smith’s stores would help best, it seems impractical to me to have someone go through the rigmarole of having someone pick it up for you and ship it. So I’d say just buy from B&N, Borders, BooksAMillion–whoever has it there locally. Or online. Hope you enjoy it.

BTW, you might want to try reading chapters 5,6,7, and 8 first. Then the current 1,2,3,4. That’s how we had it originally. For reasons too long to go into here, we re-sequenced in the final version. But I tested the original at LTUE and think you might want to try it that way. Let me know how it goes if you do.

  3. Heh, sounds good to me, John.

I’ll get cracking on acquiring the book. Or course, my wife will probably steal it from me first (she loves to read my books first and reads faster than I do) so I shall also give her the advice about re-ordering the chapters.

    Thanks!

    Andrew
