Artist Dixon Leavitt does Hunger

Dixon Leavitt is an amazing artist. He recently emailed me saying: “Sometimes I just start sketching with no plan in mind. This just popped out. Thought you’d like to see it.” It’s Hunger from Servant of a Dark God.

Duuuuuuuuuuuude!

Dixon explains the step by step of the creation of this painting at dixondoodles.blogspot.com.  You’ll want to noodle around that blog to see the other artwork he’s done.

  • Does anyone going to LTUE want “What Comes Next?”

LTUE didn’t have enough slots to include the presentation in the schedule, but I’m willing to give it in the chat area by the lobby to folks who are interested. Probably on Saturday.

So in “What Comes Next?” I share two tools I use that help me figure out where to start my stories and, well, what comes next all the way to the end. The second tool encapsulates, for me, the core of what story is all about.

If you’re interested, let me know

EDIT: I’m targeting 8-9 am on Saturday.

  • Faithful Readers, Nominate Awful Intent for the Whitneys before Dec 31st!

Awful-Intent-originalSend Frank, Sheriff Hood, and the Knitters of Death club to kick some award patootie!

Here’s how: go to: http://whitneyawards.com/ and click “Nominate” at the top.

Enter a bit of info and boom! But this needs to happen before December 31st.

The Whitney Awards are open for the public to nominate books they think are great and which are written by LDS authors (this is where your voice is heard, Faithful Reader). Those books that get at least 5 nominations are read and rated by a panel of judges. The judges then send on the finalists in each category to the Academy for voting.

Servant won an award in 2009. Awful Intent is doing well, and if the reviews piling up are any indication, it could win another.

Please take a few moments to send Frank to kick some award patootie.

It’s time for Frank to bring home a trophy.

  • New site design!

Thanks to Rick Hellewell at CellarWeb, a web developer of many years with great skills and excellent rates, I have a new responsive website, which means it adjusts between desktop and mobile displays so the page looks great no matter how you visit. He fixed a number of other things, like my lack of indenting comments, as well as adding features on the back end. I’m so excited. I hope you enjoy the new look!

If you have any issues or suggestions, please let me know. And if you’re looking for help with a website, I recommend Mr. Rick without reservation. He’s been a pleasure to work with.

And now, back to Awful Intent.

  • News: LDStorymakers

You want to go to a writing conference dedicated to writing commercial (popular) fiction. Stuff people like to read. You want a conference that actually helps you on the business end, not just with craft. You live in Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, northern Arizona, or maybe a bit farther. What if you could go to one that featured the following:

    1. AUTHOR: Anne Perry. Yes, that Anne Perry, the mega mystery goddess.
    2. LITERARY AGENT: Michael Bourret (Dystel & Goderich Literary Management)
    3. LITERARY AGENT: Hannah Bowman (Liza Dawson Associates)
    4. LITERARY AGENT: Alyssa Henkin (Trident Media)
    5. LITERARY AGENT: Michelle Witte (Mansion Street Literary Management)
    6. EDITOR: Victoria Curan (Harlequin Heartwarming, which is a line that focuses on wholesome contemporary romances that celebrate traditional values, strong communities, family connections and true love)

Plus lots of other great folks. Including some who are making some nice numbers on Kindle selling independently.

    Geez, John. Sounds fab!

Yeah. It’s happening May 10-11, 2013 in Provo, UT (a glorious time in Utah). It’s the LDStorymakers conference. There’s not a better conference in the Intermountain area. I presented last year. It was fun and insightful. I’ll be there this year. It’s great for meeting other authors (that includes lots of friendly folks trying to break in). And, obviously, meeting agents and editors.

The thing is the attendance is capped. Last year they turned folks away.

If you want in, I suggest you register now.

See you there! (Really, I hope you come up and say hello.)

Dickie says it’s Garrison Keillor meets Art Bell. We’re going to talk about my book, writing, and weird crap. He takes callers. So be ready to share your stories and enjoy the fun!

  1. Looks like I’ve got a new wallpaper. 🙂

I’m going to be starting a new review blog (the old one somehow lost all the images, and I hadn’t updated it in ages anyway), and you’ll be up for a re-review closer toward the holidays. If it’s okay with you, I’ll shoot you an email for an interview as well.

  2. Sure. BTW, have you ever been to Elitist Reviews? I link to it in the sidebar, but they’ve added more reviewers. I don’t know if they’re expanding or set, but if you don’t want to maintain a whole site, you might want to contact them.

  3. I think I’ve contacted them about it once before. If they’re expanding again soon, I’d love to get on board. My taste in books runs VERY similar to theirs. Tell you what: I’ll contact them again and you give me a good reference and we’ll be set.

  4. Holy crap, that totally beats the picture of Hunger that I had in my head.

Kudos, Dixon. That picture is awesome.
