Smith’s Grocery Goodness

Just saw the paperback of SERVANT OF A DARK GOD in a Smith’s grocery in Kaysville, Utah. What this tells me is that SERVANT sold well enough when it was in the Smith’s stores in hardback for them to bring it back a second time. I’m guessing it’s in all the stores in the state. I want to thank all of you who bought it in hardback at the time from Smith’s.

Now, some of you may be wondering–why is Brown getting so excited about his book being in a grocery store? Here’s why.

Barnes & Noble is one of my favorite places in the world. But there are only 10 stores in all of Utah. There are 50 Smith’s stores in Utah. There are probably 30-40 Fresh Markets in the same area.  There are 10 Maceys. When a book gets picked up by a grocery store, that ususally means it’s going to sell a LOT more copies. Why? Because more people can see that the thing exists. Furthermore, those displays put the cover face out. A huge draw for buyers that like to browse. So this is great news. And SERVANT might even be in some stores outside of Utah since Smiths’ and Fresh Market are national chains. If you see a copy in your local grocery store, please let me know.  

And here’s to the day when these books show up in Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and Costco as well. 

Curse of a Dark God Status

A lot of people have been asking about the release date for CURSE. The short answer is that we don’t have a date yet. I will be writing a long entry about it next Monday or Tuesday. Just know that I’m working my keister off to deliver more great entertainment to you.

Suspense Series Status

I’m working on the post on structure. It’s about half way done. I hope to publish it over the Thanksgiving weekend.

I get a few thousand folks coming to this site each month. Most leave very little trace. But there’s nothing like meeting someone new who mentions they found a blog useful or entertaining. I had a great time at the Dragons & Fairy Tales book signing and at the dinner afterwards with the other authors. One gal who came by mentioned she enjoyed the recent post on cauliflower, even though she hasn’t read SERVANT yet. That made the whole evening. Of all the posts . . . Anyway, I’m so glad to hear from my readers. Even if it’s the veggie lovers 🙂

  • Curse Update: Copy Edits, 2 Books

    CurseV2FinalV1My copy editor just delivered the marked up manuscript. I will be making the edits over the next few days. Once those are made, it’s time to publish.

    Ah, but publish just one book?

    Nope. It looks like this is going to be two:

    • CURSE: The Dark God Book 2
    • RAVELER: The Dark God Book 3

    Each book would be about 120k words. Novels can range from around 30-50k words like many middle grade novels (or most of the books written by Louis L’Amour) to the 50-70k length of a lot of romance novels to the 70-100k words of many thrillers to the 300-400k epic behemoths that George R.R. Martin and Sanderson have recently written.  I think most adult novels are around 100k.  I think most fantasies are in the 80-130k area, although many epics can be in the 200’s.  The bottom line is that both volumes will be chock full of story.

    This is all part of a strategy to tell the same long, big story as originally planned, but do it in quicker chunks so that the series can become viable financially more quickly, but also so readers aren’t waiting so long between books.  I have tormented those who enjoyed book 1 and wanted more far too long. I want to remedy that in the future, and more frequent installments will allow me to do this. Getting these two volumes out will help set the expectation, I think.

    So a release of CURSE in July seems more than feasible. Then we’ll release RAVELER early August. Why August? Because we need to commission a new cover illustration. The soonest the artist can have it done would be August. Stay tuned. I can’t wait to see what art Victor comes up with next.

    brendanovakThe Utah chapter of the Romance Writers Association is holding a writing conference on October 7th and 8th at the Davis Conference Center in Layton, Utah where FIVE New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors will sharing key insights into writing stories. I’m talking about:

    • Kristan Higgins
    • Dean Wesley Smith
    • Raeanne Thayne
    • Lynn Kurland

    If you write stories and want an opportunity to learn from some major pros, then you will want to be at this event.

    Lesson 8 finished

    If you write poopy-slow like me, you will finish 500-700 words of your draft in an hour. Let’s see what that means for various novel sizes.

    • 25,000 words: 50 hours
    • 50,000 words: 100 hours
    • 75,000 words: 150 hours
    • 100,000 words: 200 hours
    • 200,000 words: 400 hours

    And those requirements don’t count time you might need to spend re-imagining a piece or researching some gap in your knowledge or figuring out some knotty bit you couldn’t see was problematic when you first set out. A novel can be a big project and stretch over a few weeks, especially when you don’t have eight hours a day to write.

    In this lesson, you will learn that you need to treat the draft like what it is–a project–and use basic project management techniques to help you get the work done.

  • Dark God Update! Audio book narrator has been cast

    Alex-Wyndham-headshot-200x300I’m very pleased to announce that Podium Publishing, the folks producing the audio versions of the Dark God books, has cast Alex Wyndham as the narrator for the Dark God series. Production is scheduled to take place in March and April.

    Wyndham is an actor from the UK who has played television and film roles and narrated a number of audio books. Wyndham is the real deal. Just give the samples below a listen.

  1. Congrats on your book being in the grocery stores! When I bought Servant, I stopped by two or three of my local Smith’s stores, but none of them had it. So I ended up buying it from Barnes and Noble. Here’s hoping you make it into some bigger chains.

    I’m also glad you get more blog readers than is apparent from the comments. I think having to register and be logged in could be part of what’s discouraging people from making comments. Regardless, if I take some of my precious time to actually read and follow someone’s blog, I feel obligated to make comments every now and then. That’s what I would hope for from my own blog readers. And I really enjoy your blog, so thanks!

    As for the registration, I know it is a hassle, but if I don’t do that I get tons of spam comments. Still, I think the % of people who post comments in general is always extremely low. Less than 1% of the readership of any site, if I recall it correctly.
